3 Top Reasons to Consider In-Home Senior Care

The US census bureau reports that 10,000 adults turn 65 every day and that by the year 2030 the baby boomer generation, born between the years 1946 and 1964, will have reached age 65. It is projected that by the year 2034 there will be 77 million adults aged 65 and older, compared to 56 million in 2020. There is no doubt that in-home senior care needs will grow with a growing senior population.

In-Home Senior Care Needs Will Grow

1. Home is where the heart is

A new AARP survey shows a steady rate of 77% of older adults say they want to stay in their own home as long as possible. Not only is the older population living longer than the generations of years past, but the boomers are also helping to change the way we live out our golden years.

Staying in your community as long as possible promotes independence by living life on your schedule instead of a schedule provided for you by a nursing home or assisted living facility. Independence promotes confidence, which in turn can lessen symptoms of depression and boost your immune system.

2. Safety First

The data out there shows that being in your own environment can be safer than that of nursing facilities. When you live in the same environment for decades you are familiar with a certain routine and surroundings. As we age our ability to adapt to new surroundings can diminish, along with our reflexes, balance, and memory. There is comfort in familiarity and who doesn’t like to live comfortably?

Our immune system can also diminish and we not only can become more susceptible to infections and disease, but it can take longer to recuperate from an illness. By staying in our own homes we aren’t exposed to the germs of others and therefore less likely to become ill.

3. Cost

In-home senior care is less expensive than nursing home costs, according to a study done by Genworth, a company dedicated to long term care financial solutions. The national average annual costs of home care are over $46,000 less than that of nursing homes. With assisted living facilities and nursing homes you pay per month, adult day care is paid by the day, but with the home health aides in home care you pay only for the hours you need.
