Preventing Family Caregiver Burnout Through Home Care

Home care services provide extra support to family caregivers by assisting them in caring for their loved ones. Home care services help seniors aging in place, those living with a disability, or even short-term care while recovering from surgery.

There’s no doubt that family caregivers provide a vital role, and many take on this role without a second thought. However, long-term caregiving can negatively impact your emotional, financial, professional, or home life. Home care services will help prevent burnout, also known as compassion fatigue, by reducing your daily workload and giving you more time to care for yourself.

Home care services are tailored to your loved one’s needs and your schedule. These services can include:

  • Light household chores and cooking

  • Assisting with bathing, dressing, and grooming (ADLs)

  • Companion care for park outings, doctor appointments, or simply playing cards at home

Home Care Services Support Family Caregivers

Being a family caregiver is a rewarding responsibility, but it can also bring more stress to an already busy life. If you or someone you know is providing care for a loved you are at risk for caregiver burnout. Signs that it’s time to ask for help include increased irritability, mood swings, difficulty concentrating, and physical ailments such as digestive or sleep issues or increased body aches and pain.

It is important to remember that caregiver burnout can look different for everyone. While some may have mood swings or irritability, others may feel numb and disconnected from family and friends or hobbies they once enjoyed.

UJCES has more than 50 years of experience providing support to family caregivers.  For more information on how our home care services can help prevent caregiver burnout, contact us at info@ujces.org or call 212-460-5730.
