Who is eligible for SNAP benefits in New York?

New York State residency is required to receive SNAP benefits in New York. Although a federal program, it’s run at the state level. There are limited income and asset requirements, and in some cases, documented immigrants can receive food assistance. 

How does the program work? 

An EBT (electronically benefits transfer) card receives a monthly stipend. Use the EBT card like a debit card at participating locations to purchase meat, dairy, vegetables, bread, and grains. Plants and seeds that will produce food also qualify for SNAP. You cannot use the card for paper products, cleaning supplies, nicotine, alcohol, vitamins, or medications. 

The maximum monthly allotment for a family of four in New York is $939 in SNAP benefits. While the monthly income limit for a family of four is $3,007. 

How do I apply?

To apply for SNAP benefits, visit a local agency or apply online. You will need specific tax documentation and identification along with proof of residency.
